Your Day Master
日主
The Heavenly Stem of your day pillar — the anchor of a BaZi reading. Here’s what it is, how to find yours, and what the ten stems feel like.
What the Day Master is
Your chart has four pillars — year, month, day, hour. The Day Master is the top character of the day pillar: one of the ten Heavenly Stems. It’s the “you” that everything else in the chart is read against. The year, month, and hour describe the climate around you; the Day Master is the seed in that climate.
How to find yours
Find your birth day in a BaZi calendar, or cast your chart — the day pillar’s top character is your Day Master. It depends on your exact birth date, and the day boundary follows the classical rules (23:00 counts as the next day in most schools). Your birthplace’s true solar time can also shift things near the boundary.
The ten stems at a glance

The ten stems come in five pairs, one per element, split into yin and yang:

Why it’s an anchor, not an identity label
Knowing your Day Master is a starting point, not a verdict. Two charts with the same Day Master can read very differently once the month, the year, and the hour are added. The Day Master is where a reading starts looking — not where it ends.
- The Day Master is the top character of your day pillar — one of ten stems.
- It’s the anchor the rest of the chart is read against.
- Same stem, different chart — the climate around it matters.
